Al vender más de 65 millones de copias de sus discos, Village People se convirtió en un fenómeno musical instantáneo. Su primer tema "San Francisco" (You've Got Me) en 1977, que llegó al lugar 50 de las listas en Inglaterra, fue el inicio de una trayectoria que continúa después de veinte años en el negocio de la música. En Estados Unidos fue “Macho Man” que en 1978 se coló entre las 30 principales. La agrupación fue creada por Jacques Morali, luego de que viera a un hombre disfrazado en una tienda gay de discos. Surgió en su mente la idea de poner juntos a seis estereotipos masculinos norteamericanos: el indio (Rose), el policía (Willis), el soldado (Briley), el trabajador de la construcción (Hodo), el motociclista (Huges) y el vaquero (Jones).
